Her Art: A Reflection

Bal’s art reflects a deep exploration of the inner world and emotional complexity of individuals. Through personal experiences, she conveys abstract and universal concepts of time, while also examining both individual and collective identities. By using innovative materials and techniques, she creates layered, tactile imagery that leaves space for viewers to find their own stories within her work. Characterized by constant evolution and discovery, her art challenges imposed molds and opens a space for new awareness.

Her Series

REBORN FROM THE ASHES AS KYBELE
This collection takes its name from my association in thought of Kybele, an Anatolian goddess, with the women of Anatolia. It alludes to the necessity for women to be reborn from their ashes by tearing apart the moldy understandings that confine women, ignore their creativity, and have caused countless goddess-like women to be lost within the grip of traditions accumulated over centuries.

ASK QUESTIONS
“Asking questions” is the most fundamental feature that distinguishes humans from other living beings. Philosophy began with the questions that early humans asked to make sense of natural phenomena and forms they could not explain, and it evolved into the scientific progress that carried humanity to the present day. The ability to ask questions is a sign of freedom and self-confidence. I created this collection to draw attention to the decline in the reflex of asking questions in the society I live in in recent years, and to emphasize that questioning is an integral part of civilization.

I SEE
As a continuation of the “Ask Questions” series, this collection seeks to perceive the problematic aspects of humanity and reflect what I see through my own mental and emotional filters into my works. In a sense, my main motivation for this series was the desire to document the testimonies of the era I live in through the language of art.

Her Journey from the Start

Adviye Bal was born in 1963 in Tarsus, a district of Mersin, Turkey. Her passion for art emerged at a young age and became a guiding force shaping her entire life. She grew up in an intellectual and art-filled household where her father took them on imaginary journeys to the Moon, the family lived surrounded by creativity, and she chose to make her first doll out of clay with her own hands. This environment made art one of the cornerstones of her life. Throughout her education, she embraced every opportunity to engage with various forms of art—be it theatre, literature, or painting—and remained deeply connected to artistic expression at every stage. At just 16, she held her first solo exhibition, taking an early step into the art world.

However, due to the social and economic conditions of Turkey before 1980, she was unable to continue the art education she dreamed of and completed her first higher education in Geography. As she had always been deeply connected to art since childhood, she never distanced herself from it and chose to study the Geography department, which she was very interested in. Despite these challenges, Bal never gave up her dedication to art. She saw art not only as a form of expression but as a stance against the limitations imposed by existence. In 2004, Adviye Bal graduated from Marmara University’s Atatürk Faculty of Education, Department of Painting-Handicraft Education.
